All postgraduate courses for Corrosion Engineering are offered online. Units are taught by leading academics with relevant expertise in the subject matters through both industry experiences and cutting-edge research.

A higher degree by research (HDR) from Curtin will enable you to pursue a specialist area in corrosion and materials science and engineering, build knowledge in your profession and contribute to valuable research.
This course is tailored to address industry needs and can be undertaken while working as there are no requirements to attend classes on campus. It offers a solid grounding in corrosion engineering and will help you develop skills that are relevant to the energy and resources industries, particularly for careers in oil and gas, refining and chemical processing, mining and mineral processing, power generation and defence.
The Graduate Certificate is a six months full-time study option. The duration of the studies can vary if you opt for a part-time program.
In this course, you will learn characteristics of engineering materials as well as the fundamental electrochemical principles that govern corrosion. The course also provides an introduction to corrosion prevention and control methods, with emphasis on the Resources Industry, but also applicable to other scenarios.
After the introductory courses, you will then select two additional units from a range of advanced corrosion and materials topics to further your knowledge into specific areas that are of interest to you. Optional units for Graduate Certificate degree include: (i) corrosion in liquids, (ii) atmospheric corrosion, (iii) microbiologically influenced corrosion, (iv) coatings and electrochemical protection, (v) concrete corrosion, and (vi) process safety and risk management.
Developed in partnership with Woodside and Chevron, the Graduate Diploma in Corrosion has been created to meet the growing industry demand for both qualified corrosion and materials engineers and quality research in this field.
The duration of the Graduate Diploma in Corrosion is one year in a full-time study basis. The study duration of the Graduate Diploma can vary if you opt to study part-time.
The Graduate Diploma in Corrosion will provide you with a well-rounded knowledge of corrosion and corrosion prevention through completion of industry-tailored coursework. In this course, you will study, for example:
- aqueous and atmospheric corrosion,
- flow regimes in pipelines and predictive modelling,
- corrosion testing and mitigation strategies,
- engineering materials – properties and behaviour.
Master of Science (Corrosion Engineering)
This new Master of Science (MSc) degree provides you with advanced knowledge and awareness of recent discoveries in corrosion.
An MSc degree in corrosion engineering diversifies your skill set and enhances your employment opportunities across a broad spectrum of industries. You will learn the fundamentals of corrosion covering materials, electrochemistry, thermodynamics, and engineering principles. You will be able to apply corrosion principles to practical examples in complex environments and situations to select appropriate prevention and mitigation strategies.
The advanced MSc degree comprises both coursework and research components. The coursework prepares you with the necessary foundation while the research component allows you to apply the acquired theoretical knowledge to scientifically design and conduct short-term corrosion research as well as communicate your findings to the wider corrosion communities.
The MSc is one and a half year’s full-time study. The study duration can vary if you opt to study on a part-time basis.

A higher degree by research (HDR) from Curtin will enable you to pursue a specialist area in your field, build knowledge in on Corrosion and Materials and contribute to important research.
Our higher research degrees are awarded following the completion of a major thesis, involving independent original research, under the supervision of a thesis committee.
Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) offered at Curtin University aims to expand knowledge beyond the undergraduate level, culminating in a research thesis.
The minimum criteria for entry include a bachelor degree with honours or a postgraduate diploma. Find out more.
One to two years of full-time study, or part-time equivalent.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Doctoral research degree candidates generate new knowledge, either by the discovery of new facts, the formulation of theories or the innovative reinterpretation of known and established ideas.
Criteria for entry include a research master degree or a bachelor degree with first or upper second-class honours with a research thesis. Find out more.

How to apply for scholarships?
Under the Research Training Program (RTP), Australian and New Zealand citizens, as well as Australian permanent residents undertaking doctoral degrees by research, are eligible for an Australian Government RTP Fee Offset Scholarship which will automatically be assessed at the point of application to an HDR course.
